The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

New York’s first-in-the-nation plan to levy a hefty toll on drivers entering Manhattan is the focus of a legal battle playing out in federal court. A Manhattan judge heard arguments Friday in lawsuits brought by unionized public school teachers and other irate New Yorkers seeking to halt the $15 “congestion fee.” The lawsuits claim federal transportation officials approved the plan without proper scrutiny of its negative impacts. New York transit officials maintain they conducted extensive environmental reviews and have proposed mitigation plans to address any impacts. They plan to roll the fee out June 30.
A witness at Sen. Bob Menendez's bribery trial says the cost of certifying that meat sent to Egypt follows Islamic dietary requirements skyrocketed after a single U.S. company was given a monopoly in a cozy deal prosecutors say Menendez arranged. James Bret Tate is a U.S. diplomat who was based in Cairo for several years. He explained to a Manhattan federal court jury Friday how Halal meat certification ended up in the hands of a single U.S. company rather than many. Prosecutors say the Democrat was behind the creation of the monopoly as a payback for bribes he received from a friend of his wife.
Would Lisa Simpson set up a tent at New York University to protest the war in Gaza? How would Principal Skinner respond if she did? Hard to say, but some NYU students facing discipline for their actions during this spring’s pro-Palestinian protests have been assigned a 49-page workbook that includes a “Simpsons”-based module on ethical decision-making. Some have been asked to write an apologetic “reflection paper." NYU spokesperson John Beckman say the process is meant to be educational. Like colleges across the U.S., NYU was the scene of recent protests over Israel’s response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.
Voters have sided with abortion rights supporters every time the issue has been directly on the ballot since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the nationwide right to abortion in 2022. This year, the question could be put before voters in yet more states. It's a lock to be on the ballot in Florida, Maryland and South Dakota. And it's a possibility in several other states, including Arizona and Colorado. The abortion rights measures would not all guarantee the same level of access, and some are so narrow that Planned Parenthood doesn't support putting them on the ballot.
After a string of hospitalizations for long COVID, Paul Schrader had a realization. “If I’m going to make a film about death,” Schrader told himself, “I’d better hurry up.” The health of the 77-year-old filmmaker has since improved. But that sense of urgency only increased. On Friday, Schrader was to premiere his Russell Banks’ adaptation “Oh, Canada” at the Cannes Film Festival. It extends the prolific chapter of Schrader's late-in-life filmmaking, and reteams him with Richard Gere, the star of Schrader's “American Gigolo" some four decades earlier.
